Shane's Books

Shane Schaetzel is a local Catholic catechist, apologist, and a resident of Greene County, Missouri. He writes Catholic books that specifically deal with the questions and issues Catholics often encounter in the Ozarks. The books are apologetic in nature, but written in a simple and easy-to-read fashion. They're great as a gift for Evangelicals (Baptist, Assemblies of God, Pentecostal, Nondenominational, etc.) to help them better understand the Catholic Church. They're also useful in helping Catholics refresh their understanding of the Catholic Christian Faith. These books come highly recommended by some local priests.

Father Oscar Lukefahr, C.M. was a local Catholic priest, theologian, writer, and apologist. He was best known as the author of many introductory books and tracts on the subject of Catholicism, and operated the Catholic Home Study Service from the Archdiocese of St. Louis. Father Lukefahr's books have served Catholics in the Ozarks for decades.

Catechism of the Catholic Church is a contemporary adult catechism issued by Rome in 1992 and approved by Pope Saint John Paul II. It is designed for comprehensive study of the Catholic Christian Faith in the modern era.

YouCat is the same contemporary catechism as above, but designed for young people (teens and young adults), and approved by Pope Benedict XVI.

Catechism of the Council of Trent, also called the Roman Catechism, is an adult catechism that was first published in the sixteenth century (the Protestant Reformation period), by the order of Pope Saint Pius V, to explain the Catholic Christian Faith clearly and calmly in the face of Protestant objections. It still serves as an excellent compendium of the Church's doctrine and tradition.

The New Saint Joseph Catechisms are based on the timeless Baltimore Catechism, first published for English-speaking Americans in the nineteenth century. These paperback volumes are designed for children and categorized by grade level. Parents will want to read their description for age appropriate instruction.

The Catholic Bible, both in large and regular print, is the official and unaltered version of Scripture used in historic Christianity. The Bibles listed here contain all the original books removed by Protestants in the sixteenth through nineteenth centuries. The Revised Standard Version - Catholic Edition (RSV-CE) is considered the most universally accepted Catholic Bible in the English-speaking world and is internationally used for liturgical readings in all English-speaking countries. The New American Bible - Revised Edition (NABRE) is the specific Bible used by the US Catholic Bishops, and particular to most liturgical readings in the US Catholic Church.

However, if older English is more your speed, there is always the classic Douay-Rheims Bible (DRV), which is slightly older than the King James Bible and has been in use for centuries. There is also a paperback of the King James Bible (KJV), printed specifically for Catholics. It comes in two-volumes, and while it has never been officially approved for Catholic use in a liturgical setting, it is safe for personal devotion.
